Rebecca Atkinson   The FEMACorps Spotlight today feaures Rebecca Atkinson of Colorado.   Name: Rebecca Atkinson   Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado   Rebecca is serving as the Spruce 2 NCCC FEMA Corps Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she enjoyed her previous experience as a NCCC Corps Member at the Sacramento campus and wanted to continue to help others, travel, and build her resume.

VS alum Cooling among Kirkwood ACT Scholarship honorees

Ten current students have been awarded ACT Endowed Scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. The scholars are Aaron Hartke of Marion; Ashley Allen of Cedar Rapids; Bryan Griswold of Cedar Rapids; Clare Cooling of Vinton; Jessica Gibson of Iowa City; Kara Johnson of Marion; Kevin Frias of Bogota, New Jersey; Ryan Deerberg of Cedar Rapids; Sarah Mally of Cedar Rapids and Tyler Shepard of Ladora.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Team Leader Spotlight: Melissa Ridder

Melissa Ridder, Hickory 5 Team Leader   If you have seen less of the FEMA Corps members around Vinton in the last few days, it's because the teams have traveled to Alabama to begin their FEMA training. They recently completed their NCCC training and will be deployed to disaster areas throughout the country upon completion of their FEMA-specific training. Today's spotlight is on Hickory 5 Team Leader Melissa Ridder.

Hickory 6 helps Benton County Nature Center

FEMA Corps members David Sexton and Kyle Paiz sand cedar logs for Benton County  Nature Center.   A new AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team, Hickory 6, started their first project at the Benton County Conservation Board helping them build an outdoor nature classroom from September 18 to September 19, 2012.   Hickory 6 used 60 tons of gravel and limestone to build a quarter mile trail connecting the front of the building to Rodgers Park and the back of the building to a relaxing area for anyone to sit and play in.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Turned a Day of Remembrance into a Day of Action

NCCC FEMA Corps Pine 6 at Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity worksite during 9/11 rememberance. By Kimberly Walker September 11 is a day that has become a national day of service.  NCCC FEMA Corps team, Pine 6, participated in this service day by partnering with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity for two days providing home construction in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Pine 6 was tasked with installing interior walls to enable the setting of the roof trusses the following week.

Lynne Saladin By: Krista Eichhorst Name: Lynne Saladin Hometown: San Diego, California Lynne is serving as the Hickory 4 NCCC FEMA Corps Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to make a difference and give back to the community. Lynne graduated from Valhalla High School in 2008 and Whittier College in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and Spanish and a minor in anthropology.

Cedar 4 helps improve Nature Conversancy

Amanda, Zach and Allison are working on bracing the roof of the warming hut.   NCCC team, Cedar Four’s sixth and final project is working withThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Plymouth County Conservation Board in Westfield, Iowa. The Nature Conservancy is home to the Broken Kettle Grasslands, which is the largest prairie land in Iowa and is home to over 40 bison and a rare species of snakes. Plymouth County Conservation Board manages 2200 acres of parks and public recreational areas, including a hill used for snow tubing in the winter.

Cedar 1 helps with Indiana park beautification

NCCC Team Leader Holly loading wood chipper with invasive honeysuckle.   CCC team, Cedar 1 is serving from September 10 to November 2 with the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department (HCPR) in Noblesville, Indiana. The team is working on a variety of projects that will contribute to the upkeep and beautification of the parks. The team will work in 11 of the county’s parks, which are used for leisure activities, exercising, outdoor education and observing wildlife to name a few.
